Mathematics and Natural Sciences: Theory and Application

The Students’ Conference “Mathematics and Natural Sciences: Theory and Application” hosted by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Kaunas University of Technology and the students’ union FUMSA, welcomes students specializing in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology to showcase their scientific research or final thesis. This event is tailored for students from universities, colleges, and abroad who are eager to share their expertise, passions, or explore fresh ideas. Join us for an enriching experience of learning, collaboration, and discovery.

About the Conference

On 16 May 2025, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of Kaunas University of Technology, together with the student association “FUMSA”, is organising the scientific student conference “Mathematics and Natural Sciences: Theory and Application”.

Bachelor, Master and PhD students from Lithuanian and foreign universities are invited to discuss scientific and practical issues, present their ongoing or completed research projects and present the results of their work.

The aim of the conference is to encourage students’ scientific activities, critical thinking, research skills, data collection, analysis and presentation skills, as well as to gain new ideas, communicate, collaborate and discuss topics relevant to young people.

The event is free of charge and open to all active students interested in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and other sciences.

The conference “Mathematics and Natural Sciences: Theory and Application” was first organised in 1996. The initiator of the conference, Professor A. Aksomaitis, organised it together with the students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at KTU. The conference, which has now become a tradition, is actively supported by Kaunas University of Technology, the Lithuanian Mathematical Society and the student organisation “FUMSA” of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

Conference programme

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Brigita Abakevičienė

Brigita Abakeviciene nuotrauka

Presentation Topic: “CERN – What is it and how to get there?”

Associate Professor at the Department of Physics, Chair of the CERN Baltic Group, and Student Engagement Coordinator at the Lithuanian Particle Physics Consortium, with over 22 years of pedagogical and scientific experience working with students.

Brigita Abakevičienė holds a dual doctoral degree in Applied Physics from Kaunas University of Technology and University of Poitiers (France). Her research is conducted in the field of Functional Materials and Technologies, with a focus on: the application of nanotechnology for the development of antimicrobial surfaces, analysis of the physical and chemical properties of structures formed via additive manufacturing, and studies in alternative hydrogen energy technologies. This research includes the development of new technological processes, the creation of innovative nanocomposite materials, and the application of advanced research methodologies.

Dr. Marius Vileiniškis

Marius Vileiniškis

Presentation topic: “Applying Data Science in Business – Creating Value Through Mathematics”

Marius Vileiniškis is a data scientist with a background in applied mathematics. Marius holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Kaunas University of Technology and earned his PhD from the University of Nottingham. He effectively applies his knowledge in practice. His academic interests included fault detection, diagnostics, risk analysis, and reliability modelling—particularly in railway and oil industry systems. Later, he transitioned into data science, working as a senior data scientist and machine learning engineer at companies such as Danske Bank, HomeToGo, IBM, and Mambu. Currently, he serves as a Staff Data Scientist at Majid Al Futtaim Group.

Marius is also passionate about nurturing young talent—he has contributed to mentorship programs for KTU students and participated in master’s thesis defense committees. His experience spans a broad range of data science applications across various industries.
