Mathematics and Natural Sciences: Theory and Application

The Students‘ Conference “Mathematics and Natural Sciences: Theory and Application”, organized by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Kaunas University of Technology, and students‘ union FUMSA, invites students of mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology science to present their scientific research or final bachelor thesis. Event is orientated in students from universities, colleges and abroad countries, who want to participate, aspire to reveal their knowledge, interests or find new ideas.

About the Conference

The conference “Mathematics and Natural Sciences: Theory and Application” has been organized since 1996. The author of the idea was professor A. Aksomaitis. Professor and some students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences turned the idea into reality. It wouldn’t be possible without Kaunas University of Technology, The Association of Lithuanian Mathematicians, Student’s organization FUMSA and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences which take active part in organizing the Conference annually. The aim of the conference “Mathematics and Natural Sciences: Theory and Application” is to encourage students’ interest in Mathematics and Natural Sciences, collaboration with students from different universities, colleges and countries and initiate a discussion about the problems of Mathematics, Physics, Biology and other Natural Sciences.

Conference keynote speakers:

Dr. Daiva Petkevičiūtė-Gerlach (KTU) “Mathematical models of the DNA molecule”

Dr. Daiva Petkevičiūtė-Gerlach’s main area of scientific work is modelling DNA to understand the influence of the mechanical properties of this molecule on gene expression. In her research, the scientist uses various mathematical methods, large-scale calculations and the analysis of experimental data. Daiva Petkevičiūtė-Gerlach completed her studies in applied mathematics at KTU and her PhD in mathematics at EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne), Switzerland.

Dr. Mažena Mackoit-Sinkevičienė (VU) “Optical clocks: from ultra-precise timekeeping to spying on the quantum world”

Dr. Mažena Mackoit-Sinkevičienė is a physicist, TFAI and FNI researcher at the Faculty of Physics, Vilnius University, a staff member of the Centre for Physical and Technological Sciences, a member of the European Physic Society Young Minds Steering Committee and a member of the Board overseeing European activities. She has received various awards for her academic and scientific achievements, including the Dr Karl Mey International Scholarship, the European Physic Society Prize, the Young Minds Competition Prize of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, thanks from the Rector of Vilnius University, etc. Her current research interests are in quantum electronics and quantum optics. Together with her colleagues, the scientist is investigating which phenomena in the cooled gas clouds could be used to develop quantum simulators, more accurate atomic clocks and quantum sensors.
